What do we teach in the Nursery and Reception?

In our school,  children aged 2-5 follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, which is carefully planned to help the children progress towards achieving the knowledge and skills needed for compulsory education at the age of 5. We provide a safe, happy, stimulating and child centred environment in which structured play, exploration and individual choice are at the centre of the children's education. Outdoor play is also an important part of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and is planned in daily.

What do we teach in Years 1-6?

We have a broad, balanced and creative curriculum which engages and motivates pupils of all abilities. We encourage children to learn enthusiastically through using a range of teaching and learning strategies and through exciting projects, such as keeping hens and hatching eggs, helping the polar bears, imagining the story of Noah and the Flood, poetry slams with Michael Rosen and helping the dragons who hatched in the school!

Since September 2014, Earlsmead has implemented the Government’s new National Curriculum. The curriculum enables pupils to develop independent, co-operative and decision making skills that help them to learn. Reading, writing and maths are used to support learning across the curriculum.

In our school, children, parents, carers and staff come from all over the world. We teach children to respect the cultures and religions of others and we involve everyone in a variety of cultural and religious festivals and national events, sharing together celebrations which are important to each other.

We have made a huge commitment to technology in our school. From Nursery to Year 6 we have a range of up to date equipment such as iPads, interactive flat panels and Chromebooks. Every year group has their own trolley of 30 Chromebooks for one-to-one use across the curriculum. We have been featured on CBBC Newsround for our leading edge use of technology.

At the beginning of each term, we share with parents and carers the topics that the children will be learning in that term. You will find information about these on this website.
